Candombe is a dance academy and company from the city of Medellín, whose headquarters are located in the Manila neighborhood, sector Poblado, south of Medellín. As a poetic evocation with its name, it exalts the Music originating from the Río de la Plata, creating dance works that weave the stories of Tango and Milonga, as genres inherited from Candombe. They have fostered a dialogue that transcends the staging of the dance and integrates Music, history, theater, literature, fiction and the possibilities of creating aesthetic and musical narratives from these Rioplatense genres. In Medellín there is a great fondness for Tango, which goes from its years of transition towards modernization, the bars that debated the time of the workers between their work and leisure, the memory of the singer-songwriter Carlos Gardel and the hobbies preserved and cultivated in the bars and meeting places. It is an entire practice and a way of inhabiting the world that is configured around this Rioplatense heritage, and the staging of El Candombe seeks to redefine the values of Tango and Milonga through its interpretations and artistic creations.
At the El Candombe headquarters, training is offered in group courses or personalized classes for basic, intermediate and advanced levels of Tango, Milonga, Salsa, Bachata and Porro. Additionally, there are meetings of dancers and small-format shows are constantly held, where spectators immerse themselves in what was built from a small and profound creation.
As Alfredo Zitarrosa said: “The Milonga is the daughter of Candombe, just as the Tango is the son of the Milonga.”
