The Medellín Pilot Public Library for Latin America was founded in 1952 thanks to an agreement between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Colombian government.
The first headquarters of La Piloto was located on La Playa Avenue, in the center of the city. By the 50s, Medellín had a growing population with great possibilities and experiences in reading and writing.
A series of programs and activities were established at the Library to reach out to readers, and our activities were decentralized by creating library posts in companies, hospitals, commercial areas, places of confinement and, of course, promoting the strategy of traveling boxes in schools and colleges. In addition, the Branches or satellite libraries began to vibrate in other areas of the city. Thus, the Pilot Library managed to have a presence in every corner of Medellín.
The traveling boxes and the Bibliobús were an important means of promoting our library services, fostering rapprochement between books and readers, bringing cultural programming and the promotion of reading to the places of daily life in the community. In the 1960s, the Piloto moved to the Otrabanda sector, today the Carlos E. Restrepo neighborhood, to the building where it currently has its headquarters.
